World Cleanup Day

World Cleanup Day is an annual global event dedicated to cleaning up our planet.

On this day, millions of people come together to remove litter and waste from streets, parks, beaches, and natural areas. The goal is to raise awareness about environmental issues and promote a cleaner, healthier Earth.

Since 2018, World Cleanup Day has become the biggest civic movement in human history, uniting 211 countries and territories – which includes 95% of UN-listed countries – across the world, and 91 million volunteers, equal to 1.1% of global population – all striving to create a cleaner planet.

The Mission:
To empower individuals, communities, organisations, and governments in driving sustainable change in waste management practices and cross-sector cooperation through collective action.

How to Get Involved with World Cleanup Day 2024

  • Mark your calendar

World Cleanup Day 2024 falls on Friday, September 20th. Put it in your calendar and commit to participating. Whether you have just a few minutes or an entire day to spare, your contribution matters.

  • Join or organise a cleanup event

Find an Existing Event: Visit the official World Cleanup Day website or search local community groups and organizations. Look for cleanup events happening near you. These could be organized by schools, environmental clubs, NGOs, or local government bodies. Sign up for an event that aligns with your interests and availability. You’ll receive details about the meeting point, time, and necessary supplies.

Organize Your Own Event: Can’t find an event nearby? Be a catalyst for change! Gather friends, family, or colleagues and organize your own cleanup. Choose a location—be it a beach, park, or neighborhood—and set a date. Promote your event through social media, flyers, and word of mouth. Encourage others to join you.

  • Gather Supplies

Before the cleanup day, make sure you have the following essentials:
Trash Bags: Bring sturdy trash bags to collect litter.
Gloves: Protect your hands while picking up trash.
    Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated.
Sunscreen and Hat: If you’re cleaning outdoors, protect yourself from the sun.
Comfortable Shoes: You’ll be on your feet, so wear comfortable footwear.

  • Practice Safety and Hygiene Safety First:

Be cautious when handling sharp objects or hazardous materials. Don’t touch anything that could harm you. COVID-19 Considerations: Follow local health guidelines. If participating in a group event, maintain social distancing and wear a mask if required.

  • Clean Up and Sort

Start Cleaning: Head to your chosen location and start picking up trash. Focus on areas with high litter density.
Sort Waste: Separate recyclables (plastic, glass, paper) from non-recyclables. Dispose of them appropriately.

  • Document Your Efforts

Take Photos: Capture the before-and-after scenes. Share them on social media with the hashtag #WorldCleanupDay2024.
Spread Awareness: Use your photos and experiences to raise awareness about the importance of waste reduction and environmental stewardship.

  • Reflect and Celebrate

    Reflect:
Think about the impact you’ve made. Every piece of trash removed contributes to a cleaner environment.
    Celebrate:
Attend any post-cleanup gatherings or celebrations. Connect with fellow participants and celebrate your collective efforts.
