Leave Only Footprints: A Guide to a Responsible Summer Adventure

By Fathima Sumayya

Summer is finally here, and with it comes the irresistible urge to pack your bags and head for some sunshine! Whether you’re craving the refreshing sea breeze or the tranquillity of hills, the country has incredible destinations waiting to be explored. But here’s the thing: we can all enjoy these stunning places while minimising our impact on the environment.

Let’s dive into some tips for a sustainable August adventure!

Adventure Awaits.... Naturally!

The UK’s National Parks offer breath-taking landscapes – perfect for hiking, biking, and exploring. Here are some tips to minimise your impact:

  • Public Transport Power

Many National Parks have excellent public transport links. Ditch the car and enjoy the views from the train or bus window. Bonus: you can avoid traffic jams and parking woes!

  • Take only memories, leave only footprints

Pack light lunches in reusable containers and always dispose of waste properly.

  • Become a scientist!

Keep an eye out for interesting plants and animals. Many parks have citizen science programs where you can report your sightings and contribute to valuable research! (explore more on UK National Parks)

Hitting the Beach: Fun in the Sun, Light on the Footprint

The UK boasts stunning coastlines, perfect for building sandcastles and soaking up the sun. But how can you be a beachcomber with an eco-conscious heart?

  • Ditch the disposables!

Pack a reusable water bottle and say no to plastic straws! Did you know a single plastic straw takes hundreds of years to decompose? Ugh!

  • Respect the wildlife

Keep your distance from nesting birds and avoid disturbing rock pools. These delicate ecosystems are home to fascinating creatures.

  • Become a Beachcombing Buddy!

Organise a friendly competition with your little buddies to see who can collect the most litter. Every little bit helps keep our beaches clean for wildlife!

Up, Up, and Away (as Sustainably as Possible!)

Traveling by plane can have a higher carbon footprint. But if that’s your only option, there are ways to make it a little greener…

  • Pack light!

Every extra kilo on board adds to fuel consumption. Pack light and avoid unnecessary baggage.

  • Carbon offsetting

Many airlines offer carbon offsetting programs. This invests in projects that reduce greenhouse gasses elsewhere.

  • Direct flights

Opt for direct flights whenever possible. Connecting flights often burn more fuel.

By making small, conscious choices, we can all contribute to more sustainable travel. Remember, responsible travel isn’t about sacrificing fun – it’s about exploring new places with an extra touch of care for the environment and the amazing communities that call these destinations home. So, pack your bags, grab your reusable water bottle, and get ready for an unforgettable (and sustainable) August adventure!
